Unleash a wave of delight as we bring you heartwarming news straight from the animal kingdom. The Werribee Open Range Zoo in Melbourne has been buzzing with excitement as they welcomed a new addition to their family – a baby rhino, born to Kipenzi, an 11-year-old southern white rhino. This is Kipenzi’s second calf and he’s already making his presence felt with his spirited personality.
Unlike her first baby, which she tragically rejected years ago, Kipenzi has been a doting mother this time. The duo has been sheltered from public view to strengthen their bond. However, visitors will soon get a glimpse of the little one exploring his new home. Dr. Mark Pilgrim, the zoo’s director, praised Kipenzi’s maternal instincts and how she is doing everything expected from a mother rhino.
Kipenzi herself was born at Werribee Zoo in 2013 to resident rhino Sisi. Despite presenting a danger to her calf as she would not let Kipenzi out of her sight, even just to walk alongside her to nurse, Kipenzi has grown into an attentive mother.
In the coming weeks, the public will have the opportunity to be part of a naming competition for the new rhino calf. His mother’s name, Kipenzi, translates to “precious one” in Swahili, setting a high bar for the little one’s name.
As we celebrate this joyous occasion, let’s not forget about another little rhino who made headlines recently. The birth of a rare Eastern Black Rhino was indeed a cause for celebration.
Dr. Pilgrim anticipates that the young rhino will be quite a handful as he grows older. He shared his expectations with The Guardian.
