In a heartwarming prelude to Thanksgiving, retired military dog Yyacob was joyfully reunited with his former handler, US Army Staff Sergeant Payton May. Their emotional meeting took place in San Antonio, Texas—years after they served side by side in Iraq.

The eight-year-old Belgian Malinois dedicated nearly seven years to detecting explosives and patrolling alongside service members and even protecting US presidents. “We are grateful for the opportunity to bring military working dog Yyacob home and reunite him with his best friend,” expressed Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane.

May and Yyacob completed an elite Patrol Explosive Detection Dog course together—a rigorous program that trained them to operate off-leash over considerable distances. Initially, May thought Yyacob was “nuts,” but soon he grew to love the spirited pup who became his constant companion.

Their bond deepened during their time overseas; they shared everything from sleeping arrangements to daily adventures. However, their separation in 2020 left May heartbroken when he had to leave Yyacob behind.

Upon learning of Yyacob’s retirement, May immediately contacted American Humane—a lifeline that had previously helped a fellow K9 handler reunite with his dog. Next year, Yyacob will accompany May on his deployment to Italy, where he can finally enjoy a well-deserved retirement filled with love and care.
