Philanthropist Michael Bloomberg is donating $600 million to five historically Black colleges and universities’ medical colleges. The funds will help increase the representation of Black doctors in the medical field, currently at only 6%.

CNN reports that Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine are each receiving $175 million. Charles Drew University of Medicine & Science will receive $75 million, and Xavier University of Louisiana, which is opening a new medical school, will receive $5 million.

Bloomberg Philanthropies states that these donations will more than double the endowments of three of these medical schools. The funds will help reduce student medical school debt, with other uses to be determined later.

This donation follows Bloomberg Philanthropies’ recent $1 billion donation to Johns Hopkins Medical School, one of the largest single donations in American philanthropy history. In 2020, Bloomberg donated $100 million to four of these five schools to reduce student debt. He gave over $3 billion to various charities last year, marking him as one of America’s most active philanthropists.
