Danya and Rebecca Mahota with their daughters – Danya Mahota, released.
“Everything that could have gone wrong, went right,” reflects Danya Mahota, a father for the second time.

The drama unfolded when his wife, Rebecca, at full term, started experiencing rapid contractions. They embarked on their journey from Brewster home to Plymouth hospital, a drive usually taking 56 minutes amidst Cape Cod’s summer traffic. En route, Rebecca’s water broke.

True to the adage that the second child arrives quicker, little Summer made her entrance in record time. Her head was already out after the next contraction as Mr. Mahota pulled over to assist with the birth on the highway side.

The couple then sped off to the hospital with their newborn swaddled in a blanket. Summer was declared healthy and complication-free at the hospital. It was there that Mahota realized his wedding band had slipped off during the frenzied events.

Mahota spoke to ABC affiliate WCVB, recounting his dramatic day. He later returned to the highway to retrieve the lost ring.

“Just as we were about to give up, I found it nestled between my toes. I was scraping away some grass, and I just couldn’t believe it,” he told WCVB. “Everything that could have gone wrong, went right.”

The couple shared their extraordinary highway birth experience on GMA, offering a word of advice to other expecting parents. “Hospital guidelines on when to go are not always concrete. If things seem to be happening quickly, trust your instincts and get there as soon as possible!” they advised via email.
