In the quaint village of Yamagarni in Karnataka, India, a remarkable incident unfolded recently. Maharaj, a black dog who had gone missing, astoundingly found his way back home after journeying almost 150 miles alone. The villagers commemorated his unexpected return with a grand feast.

The owner of Maharaj, Kamalesh Kumbhar, had taken his elderly pet on a pilgrimage to Pandharpur, a sacred site in the neighboring state of Maharashtra. Kumbhar is known to visit this holy site every year during Hindu holy days in July and August. “Maharaj has always liked listening to bhajans [a devotional song]. Once, he had accompanied me on another padayatra trip to Jyotiba temple near Mahabaleshwar,” Kumbhar told PTI, an Indian news agency.

During their spiritual journey, Maharaj trailed behind Kumbhar and his companions for nearly 150 miles, captivated by the chanting of devotional songs. However, at some point along the way, Kumbhar realized that Maharaj was nowhere to be seen. Despite an extensive search and inquiries with fellow pilgrims who suggested that Maharaj might have joined another group, Kumbhar couldn’t trace his beloved dog.

“I searched for him everywhere but couldn’t find him. So, I thought maybe people were right; he left with someone else. I returned to my hometown on July 14th,” Kumbhar shared.

In a surprising turn of events, Maharaj turned up at Kumbhar’s doorstep the very next day. He appeared well-nourished and unscathed, wagging his tail as if nothing had transpired. Overwhelmed by this unforeseen reunion, Kumbhar and the villagers celebrated with a feast in Maharaj’s honor.

“It is such a miracle that the dog could find its way, although it was 250km or so away from home. We think it was Lord Panduranga who guided him,” an ecstatic Kumbhar expressed.
