This mesmerizing artifact, adorned with fish and other sea life in hues of green, blue, yellow, and red tiles, has seen the light of day for the first time in centuries. As the mighty Roman Empire receded like a tide from England’s Shropshire, near Wales, it left behind this breathtaking relic. The recent excavations on the largely unexplored city of Wroxeter revealed not just this stunning mosaic but also the foundations of the settlement’s main building. Described by English Heritage as one of Britain’s best-preserved examples of a Roman city, Wroxeter (or Viriconium as it was known) was established in the 90s AD. Once as large as Pompeii, this thriving city contained over two hundred houses, a civic bath house, a marketplace, a county hall, and a judicial center at its peak. Wroxeter boasts the largest free-standing Roman wall in Great Britain, with remnants of public baths that have survived the ravages of time. The site was reburied after excavation to protect it from oxidative damage and weathering. The Romans and their contemporaries often used fish and sea life motifs in their mosaics. The museum in Monastir, Tunisia, holds one of the most impressive collections of classical mosaics outside the Roman world, many of which depict sea life.
