Uber Eats driver, Paul Slobodzian, had been delivering food as a side job for over a year to fund his wedding. One evening, he delivered a Chipotle order to Erica Hernandez with a handwritten note tucked inside the bag. The note read, “Thank you for your order! I’m delivering for love on the side to give my fiancée the wedding she deserves. Any additional tip through the app or Venmo is greatly appreciated.”
Moved by his honesty and dedication, Hernandez decided to share this on her TikTok account. “I don’t have a lot of followers, but hopefully this reaches the right people,” she wrote on her video caption. Despite her modest following, the video quickly went viral.
With Slobodzian’s Venmo ID visible in the note, his account was flooded with generous donations from viewers around the world. Among these contributions was a $500 gift from Chipotle itself. “I, and Aly, my fiancée have been overwhelmed in the best way possible trying to figure out how to respond to people and show how much this means to us,” Paul said in a video on his TikTok account as inquiries poured in asking for updates. “To start I just want to say thank you so so much.”
The couple met as sophomores in college and were both driving for Uber Eats to save for their wedding. The unexpected outpouring of support allowed them to put their side jobs on hold and focus more on planning their wedding and spending quality time together.
In a display of gratitude, they set aside $1,000 for Hernandez, the customer whose TikTok video sparked the wave of generosity. They invited her as a guest of honor to their wedding. The donations through Venmo were more than enough to cover their wedding expenses.
While social media often gets a bad rap, stories like these show how it can be used to spread positivity and make a significant impact on people’s lives. For instance, a TikTok video raised $100,000 to allow an 82-year-old Walmart employee to retire, and a mom credited a stranger’s message on TikTok for saving her baby boy’s sight.
