Sara Shabir, a third-grade teacher at Tyndale Community School in Oxford, England, has found a unique way to honor her students by creating crocheted miniatures of each one. Initiated in May as a special end-of-year project, Shabir spent nearly 240 hours crafting these personalized keepsakes for her students.
Shabir discovered her passion for crocheting during the COVID-19 lockdowns and decided to use this newfound hobby to create something special for her pupils. Each of the 30 dolls took approximately eight hours to complete, demonstrating Shabir’s dedication to the project and her students.
“I feel a massive sense of accomplishment in completing this project—the joy the children showed when they saw them was worth everything,” Shabir shared on Instagram.
The dolls were not only appreciated by the students but also attracted attention from parents and social media users. Joanna Borysiak, a parent whose child is in Shabir’s class, posted a photo of the dolls on Twitter-X. The post quickly went viral with praise for Shabir’s meticulous attention to detail, including accurate representations of each student’s hairstyle and clothing.
Creating these detailed dolls was no easy task. “It was difficult to get the right skin tones and hair colors and styles!” Shabir admitted. To ensure accuracy, she meticulously planned each doll, even using a spreadsheet to keep track of the colors chosen for each student.
Last week, Shabir completed the final doll and surprised her class by bringing them in. The students were tasked with identifying which doll represented them from a photograph. The actual unveiling of the dolls left them “shocked and amazed”, leading to immediate interaction as they began brushing their doll’s hair and playing with them.
Shabir’s unique project has undeniably made her a memorable figure among both students and fellow teachers. Her dedication is evident in the time and effort she put into this project, further highlighting her commitment to her students.
