Imagine a world where squirrels lounge in the shade, cooled by fans, munching on frozen treats, and basking in their own little resort. Welcome to Breyana Elwell’s backyard. This Texas mother of two has transformed her outdoor space into a haven for the local squirrel population, providing them with much-needed relief from the sweltering heat.

Her backyard now features miniature tables attached to trees, where squirrels can enjoy a range of snacks including nuts, corn, and fruit frozen in ice cubes. With temperatures often soaring above 100°F, these icy treats are a lifesaver for the furry visitors.

Elwell has gone above and beyond to make her backyard inviting. She has constructed pathways using logs, built a courtyard, designed specialized feeders, and even installed a water fountain. However, setting up this squirrel paradise is no small task. It takes Elwell around two hours each day to set up the resort and another chunk of time to dismantle it every night to prevent any damage from her dogs.
Despite the effort and cost involved, Elwell finds joy in this unusual hobby. Her sons too love watching the squirrels. “It’s very therapeutic,” she told the Washington Post.
While it is generally advised not to feed or care for wild animals, squirrels are an exception. They have already adapted to living alongside humans in many parts of the world. So, Elwell’s squirrel resort is more of a kind gesture than a disruption to their natural lifestyle.
