Ben Kilner, a 36-year-old adventurer from East Sussex, England, is gearing up for an extraordinary expedition across Scotland on a hand-built bicycle canoe. His objective is to raise £2,500 for the charity ‘A Leg To Stand On’, which assists children in developing countries by providing prosthetic limbs. This endeavor is part of a long-standing British tradition of undertaking daring challenges for charitable causes.
The one-of-a-kind bicycle canoe, named Pedal Paddle, was built by Kilner himself over a span of two months. The challenge will test his endurance as he covers more than 150 miles of land and sea. His journey will commence from Fort William, paddling to Inverness via the Caledonian Canal and then cycling back on land along the Great Glen Way.
Kilner’s inspiration for this venture arose from a previous camping trip where he temporarily lost his mobility. “It was deeply upsetting and highlighted how much I rely on my mobility and how much we take it for granted,” he shared. Prior to this, Kilner had paddled down the River Thames in a hand-built canoe.
The Pedal Paddle is a skin-on-frame model constructed from Douglas fir and steam-bent green oak with a ballistic nylon skin stretched over it. Kilner chose this design due to its lightweight nature and ease of construction.
The expedition is anticipated to last around nine days, with Kilner spending his evenings camping. He anticipates that wind and stability will pose significant challenges due to the high sitting position on the Pedal Paddle bike mechanism.
Throughout his journey, Kilner plans to provide daily updates on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. “I’m excited to see the grand magnitude of Loch Ness and the Great Glen and immerse myself in that,” he expressed.

Kilner hopes his adventure will encourage others to embrace the outdoors and explore the world. He is part of a lineage of Brits who have accomplished remarkable feats for charity, such as the British man who ran 385 marathons across Africa in 352 days.
Kilner’s journey exemplifies not only his adventurous spirit but also his inventiveness. His story stands as an inspiration for other DIY enthusiasts. For instance, another man built an electricity-generating windmill in his own garden.
