Once renowned for its carbon-intensive automotive industry, Michigan is now riding the wave of renewable energy revolution in America.

The state made headlines recently by adding a staggering 350 megawatts of solar power to its renewable resources portfolio in 2023, marking a 10% increase.

Merging this with its existing inventory of 3,500 megawatts from solar and wind, Michigan’s green energy now powers an impressive 944,000 homes. Last year was indeed a milestone!

While Michigan may not be the reigning champion in renewable energy generation nationwide yet, it is certainly on the right track. Depending on various parameters, Michigan proudly stands between the 25th and 15th place for renewable capacity.

Michigan leans heavily on wind power, harnessing the robust onshore winds from its myriad turbines along Lake Huron’s coast to generate consistent electricity.

Midwest Today anticipates another 630 megawatts of solar energy to grace Michigan’s landscape by 2025.

The renewable energy surge aligns with Governor Gretchen Witmer’s Clean Energy and Jobs Act signed in November 2023, aimed at expanding green energy while making utility bills more affordable for consumers. Although this hasn’t materialized (with electricity and gas bills remaining constant), there’s a promising future with more renewable installations on the horizon that could make this goal a reality.
