In a unique incident that could only occur in Texas, a family from Amarillo discovered a baby bird shivering and alone during their backyard swim party and barbecue. The mother, displaying quick thinking, warmed a tortilla on the stove and used it like a warm blanket to pick up the tiny creature.

Believing they had found an owlet, the family reached out to the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (WWWRC). However, it turned out to be a Mississippi kite. The creative approach of utilizing a tortilla to keep the baby bird warm proved to be surprisingly effective, as noted by a Facebook post from the wildlife center. The post further added that wildlife rescue is always filled with lively and unexpected moments.

The young bird has been thriving and has now been affectionately named Taquito. The WWWRC found the idea of using a tortilla as a blanket so endearing that they have begun selling custom t-shirts and hoodies featuring an image of a baby bird wrapped in a tortilla, with the caption “Tortillas Save Lives.” Proceeds from these sales will contribute towards their operations.

Following the Facebook post, Katie Lasher Adlong, the mother who used the tortilla, identified herself in the comments section and received over 170 replies applauding her quick thinking. One user commented, “You’re a brilliant momma! Would have loved to see the lightbulb moment of ‘How am I gonna keep this baby safe and warm?'”

Currently, WWWRC is dealing with an influx of injured birds due to Hurricane Beryl and needs to raise funds to ensure each bird receives appropriate medical care. If you are interested in supporting this cause, you can donate here.

Share this hilarious but also brilliant quick thinking down in Texas…
