Carrie Zirbes and her husband faced a high-risk twin pregnancy filled with uncertainty. One year later, Fiona and Phoebe are healthy, happy, and thriving.

When Carrie Zirbes and her husband found out they were expecting twins, their family was already full of life with three children at home. But what began as a surprising blessing soon became something far more complicated: doctors told them the babies were not just identical twins, but an extraordinarily rare kind known as monoamniotic, or “mono mono,” twins.

Identical twins occur in about 1 in every 250 pregnancies. Mono mono twins are much rarer, occurring in only about 1 in 10,000 pregnancies. These babies share both one placenta and one amniotic sac, a situation that can create serious danger because the umbilical cords may become tangled and cut off oxygen and blood supply.

“I think I’m still trying to wrap my head around how rare it is, actually,” Carrie said.

Because of those risks, Carrie was placed on hospital bed rest so doctors could monitor the babies closely. It was a season that required patience, courage, and trust in the careful work of the medical team caring for both mother and children.

A risky pregnancy and a frightening delivery

As the pregnancy continued, doctors saw another serious concern. One baby was transfusing blood to the other, which left Baby A especially small and with an enlarged heart.

At 30 weeks, doctors determined it was time to deliver the twins. The first moments after birth were frightening. Fiona, who had been known as Baby A during the pregnancy, was not breathing and had to be intubated.

Both girls spent time in the neonatal intensive care unit, where doctors and nurses continued the careful work of helping them grow stronger. For Carrie and her family, it meant more waiting, more uncertainty, and more hope pinned to each small step forward.

Home at last, and thriving one year later

After weeks of worry, the family finally received the news they had been longing to hear. Fiona, also remembered as Fion-A, and her sister Phoebe, or Phoe-B, were healthy enough to go home.

Now, one year later, the girls have reached a beautiful milestone. Fiona and Phoebe recently celebrated their first birthday and are described as happy, healthy, and thriving.

Their beginning was rare and uncertain, marked by medical risk and anxious days for the people who loved them. But today, these two little girls are a living reminder of perseverance, skilled care, and the joy that can follow even the most frightening chapters of family life.
