David, a widowed great-grandfather who lost his wife June to cancer five years ago, is no stranger to loss. His wife spent her last months under the tender care of St John’s Hospice. This same institution also cared for Mr. Kilby, a dear friend of David’s during his end-of-life journey.
To honor their memory and support the hospice that provided solace during their darkest days, David and Narelle, Mr. Kilby’s 70-year-old widow, decided on an adrenaline-pumping adventure at Zip World in Penrhyn Quarry, Wales.
They braved the world’s fastest zip line, reaching a heart-throbbing speed of 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour).
“I knew about the zip line but never thought I’d do it until Narelle suggested it,” David told SWNS. “When we booked it, they said I was ‘probably the oldest person’ to do it. Turns out, they were right!”
David describes the experience as both nerve-wracking and exhilarating. “The zip line was over in less than a minute because it was so fast! I was nervous but also excited. And I really enjoyed it,” he added.
St John’s Hospice had been a pillar of support during June’s terminal cancer phase, providing care during her final six months. David and June spent some time at the hospice before moving home, where hospice care continued during June’s final weeks.
Their bold act made waves. Through their JustGiving crowdfunding page, they raised an impressive £9,500 for St John’s Hospice.
