Dr. Luo Qingquan performs remote surgery using robotics – Shanghai Chest Hospital
The future of medicine may lie in robotic surgery, as depicted in the above image. Dr. Luo Qingquan is seen performing a remote surgery to remove a lung tumor from a patient located 3,000 miles away. The operation was conducted at the Shanghai Chest Hospital while the patient was in Kashgar, Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

The Chinese-made 5G Medbot made this surgery possible, allowing Dr. Luo to transmit his precise movements and years of expertise across three time zones instantly. This development could potentially save countless lives in rural areas where medical professionals are scarce.

Shanghai Chest Hospital is China’s pioneer in conducting robot-assisted surgeries and holds the record for the most number of such surgeries in the country, according to Shanghai Daily.

However, the lack of specialist surgeons remains a global issue, especially in low and middle-income countries. A Lancet review reveals that these countries only have 0.7 specialist surgeons per 100,000 people, compared to 5.5 in high-income countries. Even in wealthier nations, there’s a shortage of expert surgeons and anesthesiologists.

The same report indicates that just 20% of the global surgical workforce services nearly half of the world’s population.

Robotic surgery could be a solution to this problem. While it takes over a decade to train a surgeon, a robot can be shipped and installed within months. This technology allows surgeons from affluent regions to perform surgeries in less developed areas, marking a significant advancement in medicine.
