A recent study conducted by Talker Research for SquadLocker has revealed the emotional and financial dedication American sports fans have towards their favorite teams or players. The survey, which involved 2,000 participants, found that fan commitment varied significantly.
Nearly half of the respondents (48%) identified as big fans who regularly follow games, while 32% classified themselves as moderate fans who watch games occasionally. Interestingly, a significant 20% described themselves as raging fans who never miss a match and spend over $800 annually on their favorite sports.
The study also uncovered the pre-game rituals practiced by fans. More than a fifth (22%) confessed to having a ritual they perform each time their favorite team or player competes. This percentage increases to 32% among self-proclaimed hard-core fans who engage in various pre-game traditions. These can range from wearing team merchandise, hosting tailgates and cookouts, performing chants and dances, or even praying. Some fans go to great lengths such as lighting candles for their team, obsessively washing their hands, or body painting to ensure victory.
SquadLocker’s CEO, Fletcher Jones, believes these activities enhance the sense of community among fans. He said, “Many people follow along with pro athletes and partake in traditions because it’s a bonding experience and brings people together. Sports are rooted in community.”
The research also explored the emotional impact sports have on fans. It discovered that 39% of respondents feel more sensitive than usual if their team or player loses a match. Furthermore, 14% reported experiencing a temporary decrease in overall life enjoyment following a loss.
However, there is also a brighter side to being a sports fan. Fans cherish memories of witnessing extraordinary wins. On average, fans remembered seeing five ‘one-of-a-kind’ miracle sports victories. A staggering 74% cited a win by their favorite team during a live event as ‘one of their favorite memories’.
Kaycie Brown, an athlete at 575 Volleyball, a youth sports organization, expressed the importance of fan support. She said, “The support they give enhances their lives, as well as the lives of the athletes. Fan support builds confidence and plants seeds for success.”
