At the tender age of seven, Dawson was living in fear that he and his older brother Dalton might be separated due to their precarious situation in foster care. The possibility of adoption seemed slim because Dalton suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy, is nonverbal, and a quadriplegic. While several families showed interest in Dawson, he was constantly worried that finding a new home might lead to him being separated from his brother.
However, thanks to the efforts of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and Florida-based parents Robbin and Steven, the boys were able to stay together. Upon arriving at his new home in Florida, Dawson was in the second grade but had the reading level of a kindergartner. Yet, with the love and security provided by his new family, he began to flourish academically, making it to the honor roll for four consecutive semesters.
Robbin couldn’t be happier with her two sons. She believes that Dawson’s ability to keep his brother by his side played a pivotal role in shaping him into the person he is today. In fact, Dalton’s medical condition has inspired Dawson to aspire to become a doctor so he can take care of people just like Dalton’s doctors did.
The family now owns a handicap-accessible van and a new wheelchair for Dalton. They are currently working with local vendors to install an accessible swimming pool. Robbin considers Dalton as the greatest gift she has ever received, stating that he brings more joy and love than any other person she has ever met.
