The compelling real-life story of how a small Texas town, Possum Trot, took in 77 vulnerable children from the local foster system has been beautifully depicted in the film Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot. This inspiring movie was screened in over 2,000 theaters across the United States on July 4th.
The film narrates the heartwarming journey of a pastor and his wife who, guided by divine intervention, adopted two children and then encouraged their congregation to do the same. Despite being a small community, 23 households in Possum Trot opened their doors to these 77 children.
This incredible story gained significant attention from prominent media outlets such as Opera, the Today Show, and Good Morning America. However, it wasn’t until years later that Hollywood director Josh Weigel and his producer wife Rebekah approached Bishop W.C. Martin and his wife Donna Martin. Their steadfast faith and determination led these children to find loving homes, prompting them to bring this story to a broader audience.
“When the church actually does what we’re called to do, it’s beautiful,” Mrs. Weigel said in a behind-the-scenes promotional video released by Angel Studios. The production team even visited Possum Trot to meet and interview the families and children at the heart of the story before starting a screenplay rewrite to better share their experiences.
Mr. Weigel explains that the American foster system is ground zero for most of the childhood trauma in America. It is also a hotbed for child trafficking and a primary driver of both the prison population and homelessness. “And think about how many children [are] in the system, I believe if every church were focused on two or three children, they would fix the system just like that,” said Bishop Martin.
The film was well-received, earning a 7/10 rating on Rotton Tomatoes, an A+ grade from CinemaScore, and 94% from PostTrack. It made $9.5 million on a budget of $8.1 million within the first two weeks of its release.
W.C. and Donna found the film to be an incredible representation of their life, with Donna telling the Christian Science Monitor that it felt like “deja vu,” and was “so well presented as our life.”
When asked about his decision to adopt two more children despite having little money and two children already, the Bishop says, “To be honest with you, I’m glad I did. God knows what we don’t know. And sometimes we just have to be obedient.”
