England is rejoicing the birth of the first pair of beaver kits since the species were reintroduced in the northern part of the country last year. The four beavers that have made the Wallington Estate in Northumberland their home have significantly transformed the landscape, leading to the emergence of new dams, mudflats, and ponds.
The beavers were introduced into a 25-acre habitat on the estate as part of a nationwide beaver reintroduction initiative that kicked off in Dorset in 2021. Furthermore, two beavers named Hasel and Chompy were released into the expansive 925-acre Ewhurst Estate in Hampshire last year. The beavers that have now multiplied found their home in Wallington in July.
Beavers, known as nature’s engineers, are thought to be the only animals, apart from humans, that can significantly modify their environment. They fell trees to construct dams, leading to the expansion of creeks into pools that overflow during rainfall. This results in numerous small channels in the soil distributing water in various directions. This transformation has led to a resurgence of wildlife such as kingfishers, herons, and bats in Wallington.
Paul Hewitt, the countryside manager for the trust at Wallington, said, “Beavers are changing the landscape all the time, you don’t really know what is coming next and that probably freaks some people out. They are basically river anarchists.”
The mature pair of beavers recently mated and produced a kit. Its sex is not yet known due to beavers’ lack of external genitalia. The successful reintroduction of these beavers has resulted in increased sightings around the country. Conservationists at the National Trust hope this landscape recovery will convince authorities to allow further reintroductions in larger areas.
