Despite being 105 years old, John Hamilton is a force to be reckoned with. Known as “Britain’s Last Dunkirk Veteran,” he recently celebrated his birthday by setting a new world rowing record and maintains an active lifestyle that includes daily gym workouts.

Born on the 24th of June 1915, Hamilton served in the Royal Army for 25 years during World War II. He survived the infamous Dunkirk evacuation as an anti-aircraft gunner and continues to defy all odds with his active lifestyle, which includes daily exercise and enjoying a glass of wine every other night.

At 105, retired army major and great-grandfather Hamilton has proven that age is not a barrier to ambition or physical activity. He broke the world rowing record for a 1000 meter time trial and spends 90 minutes each day exercising at the gym. “I feel good but it’s confusing—I’m so full of life and almost waiting for something to go wrong,” he said, attributing his youthful vigor to his active lifestyle.

When asked about his memories from Dunkirk, more than three-quarters of a century later, Hamilton replied that they were “clear as [a] bell”. Despite residing in a care home now, he remains self-sufficient apart from regular check-ups with a caretaker, demonstrating his independent nature.

Hamilton’s impressive achievements were honored by Clifton College, where he studied. The college flew their flag high on his milestone birthday, and members of his regiment joined him in celebration. His story serves as an inspiration for us all – proving that age does not limit one’s ability to lead an active life.
